Introduction

What is K-Dat?

K-Dat is a download editor for the FastTrack network which is used by Kazaa/iMesh/Grokster.

Whenever you search for a file in Kazaa, you get a number of search results, clicking on which starts the download. What happens in the background when you click on one such result (to start the download) is that Kazaa creates a small file (typically 100KB) which contains all the information about this download. The file will typically be named as downloadXXXXXX.dat (XXXXXX is any number). As long as this file is present in the download folder, the file will continue to download in the Kazaa "Traffic" window.

Using K-Dat, you can edit this downloadXXXXXX.dat file to change most of its parameters. You can change where the file will be placed once its done downloading, you can add a new user to download the file from (in fragments), you can remove dead or slow sources (increasing speed), and many other useful functions that Kazaa doesn't provide otherwise.

What are the system requirements for running K-Dat?

K-Dat comes as a stand alone executable file. Although there are no specific requirements, the following could be considered as a bare minimum:

1. Windows 98 (and above)
2. 32MB RAM
3. Working Kazaa installation

K-Dat does not require any additional DLL's or controls.

Is K-Dat really free and why?

K-Dat is released under the GNU General Public License. K-Dat is not only free, but you also have access to the complete source code for K-Dat, in case you wish to modify the software.

Making K-Dat free gives me the freedom to add and update its features whenever I feel like doing so without any obligations.

What programming language was K-Dat written in?

K-Dat has been written using Borland Delphi 7. It uses one additional component TShellExt by UtilMind Solutions. You will need this component while compiling the source code.

I get I/O error 16 or 32 when I try editing files using K-Dat. What's wrong?

This error occurs when you try to edit a download when Kazaa is running. To edit a download, you need to close Kazaa first.

You should download the latest version, which will disallow you to perform any editing when Kazaa is running.
