The
installation program for K-Lite is improved constantly. So make sure you
have got the latest one.
Uninstall old clients:
First
things first, make sure you have uninstalled any previous versions of Kazaa
(or any other FastTrack client, like Grokster) that you may have installed.
The best way to do this is with the standard Windows Add/Remove option in
the Control Panel/Configuration Screen.
Now
go into to your program files directory (usually c:\program files\) and open
the K-Lite directory. Delete all contents, unless => Important note: If you
have added descriptions to your shared files that you want to keep, you
might want to keep the contents of the 'db' folder, so you can copy it to
the Kazaa Lite db folder after installation. If you use the 'My Shared
Folder' to download to, you should not delete it, because any unfinished
downloads will be put there after they are finished downloading.
Deleting Spyware (optional):
Whether or not you have had a previous version of Kazaa installed, you
should always check to make sure you don't have any Spyware or Adware on
your system by downloading and installing Ad-Aware. Tell it to do a memory
scan, a deep registry scan, and to scan your hard drive. This will take some
time (especially if you have a big hard drive) but is the only way to ensure
you have no Spyware at all. Usually, you can delete anything that Ad-Aware
finds as Spyware but be careful: if you have other programs on your machine
that use Spyware (usually the ones with adverts built in to them) killing
the Spyware with Ad-Aware may stop those programs from functioning.
An
alternative Spyware removal utility is Spybot Search&Destroy.
Installation:
Now
go ahead and install K-Lite. By default it goes in C:\Program Files\K-Lite.
Be sure to select the “Delete All K-Lite Registry Keys Before Installing”
when you go to Select Components, just to be safe.
If
you set K-Lite to use the same download folder as the original Kazaa, it
will quite happily finish off any incomplete downloads that you may have had
left over.
Alternatively, if you want to use a different folder (like the default My
Shared Folder in K-Lite) you can move all the old .DAT files from the old
folder to the new one and they will still download. Important Notes: This
old partial downloads will be copied to your old download folder when they
are finished downloading. So make sure that the old download folder is still
present on your system. Also make sure that both the old and the new folders
are on the SAME partition (for example both on C:). Otherwise your files may
get deleted on completion.
I
would recommend you to create a new folder on your harddrive and set this as
your download folder. For example C:\download.
Shared Folder configuration (optional):
You
can add files/folders to your list of shared files, by going to Tools > Find
Media to Share in the Kazaa Lite menubar. Important Note: Your download
folder is automaticly shared, so you don't have to add that one to the list
of shared folders.
I
would recommend to create a new folder on your harddrive and use that to put
in the files you want to share. For example C:\shared
Username configuration (optional):
The
default username is 'kazaaliteuser' or 'defaultuser'. You should change this
into a new name, this can be done in by going to Tools > Options
Can I install K-Lite over the Original Kazaa?
Not
really. It won't install over it, it will install alongside it. You will end
up with both of them and you will still have Spyware on your machine. You
should uninstall Kazaa and any Spyware first.
Can I install a new version of Kazaa Lite on top off an old version of K-Lite,
thus overwriting the old one?
Yes,
that is possible.
Does K-Lite work on Windows 95?
No.
Is
Kazaa Lite available for the Apple Mac?
Sorry, Kazaa Lite is not available for the Mac and it never will be.

applications for Windows, Mac OS & Linux.
Does
K-Lite work on Linux?
It
is possible to run it in WINE (a Windows emulator for Linux).
Why does it say "Please rerun installation from the administrator account"
when installing?
To
install K-Lite you must have administrator or power user privileges.
Basically, if you are on a school network or a work network where you have
to logon you might not be able to install K-Lite properly.
'Error creating registry key ... ' message during installation
Do
the following to fix this problem.
Windows 98/ME:
1)
Start > Run > type: scanregw /fix
2)
Start > Run > type: regedit
3)
Navigate to the keys that gave the error and delete them.
Windows 2000/XP:
1)
Start > Run > type: regedt32
2)
Navigate to the keys that gave the error and delete them. You might need to
edit permissions (Menu > Security > Permissions) to be able to delete them.
You need administrator privileges for that.
Note: Under
Windows XP and 2000 editions, the installer gives the option to add
permissions automatically (for the limited users).
